2014 Book Drive News

So those of you who may follow this blog know that for the first Birthday that came along after Gabe died we started this Book Drive in his memory. We found that this helped to keep us busy and not so sad during the day of Gabriel’s Birthday. We’ve had 3 very successful years of doing this book drive. We’ve donated over 4,000 books to hospitals in Utah and Idaho. We’re very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in Gabriel’s name. Just this week we were reminded of what a great service this has been when we received this comment from The Meek Family:

I just wanted to let you know my 4 year old son Blake had an EEG this morning at Primary Children's in Riverton and enjoyed reading one of Gabriel's books while they attached everything. Thank you! I took his pic reading after I noticed the sticker on the back :)

Comments like this one make me remember why we have enjoyed doing Gabriel’s Book Drive so much. What a fantastic feeling to do a service for so many children.

When we started this it was  form of therapy for us and last year as much as we loved it and loved all our support it was becoming more of a stress than a therapy. We are not stopping this traditions but we are going to slow down our efforts to advertise it as much.  We still would absolutely love to get your New or Like New books and we will be delivering them to local hospitals here and in Pocatello. We just won’t be pushing to get news coverage or business help to do so. We want to do this service to remember Gabriel but we also want time to celebrate our memories of him. So this year on his 5th Birthday we will be having a Birthday dinner with his grandparents and cake but we won’t be going crazy labeling books and delivering them on his Birthday. Which is good anyway because January 26th falls on a Sunday this year. We’re looking forward to a laid back easy day of remembrance for our Gabriel.

Now if you have books for us to deliver please just mail them or drop them by, all that information is still on the how to donate page. We do hope that we still have support with the efforts of the book drive we just aren’t going to fill our holiday season with the stress of organizing such a huge book drive. It’d be awesome if we still receive enough books to donate a few hundred to more than one hospital but if we don’t we will be happy with any small bit of service we can do in Gabriel’s name.

I hope those of you who have helped us in the past understand why we are changing things this year and that you will still feel like dropping by a book or two. I hope that this is the right coarse of action for us to celebrate Gabriel’s life and remember him. If not then we may change things up again next year but you just never know until you try it.

Thank you and we Love you all for all your great support. Please feel free to contact me if you wanted to continue to help with the book drive like you have in the past.

We’ve already had a few books donated by Madison’s 6th grade teacher and we are so thankful for them.

Last Book Delivery

On Friday the 15th we delivered the last of the books. We took 506 books to Primary Children’s Hospital. We’re so happy to be able to have donated so many books to all the local hospitals. So for my total count of delivered books there were 1,948 books delivered to 10 separate hospitals. We hope that the books donated will be helpful to those who have to spend time at the hospitals. We also want to give our thanks once again to all those who helped us with this great project.  We look forward to next year.

Last Week’s Books & Kael’s Blanket Drive

On Wednesday last week I met my friend Brigette and gave her some blankets and stuffed animals for her blanket drive. Like our book drive they do an annual Blanket & stuffed animal drive for Primary Children’s Medical Center in memory of their son Kael. To read more about their family go here. Brigette has been awesome to support our book drive the last two years and we greatly appreciate it.

After meeting with Brigette we went to the Riverton Hospital. We delivered 249 books to their Volunteer Service’s director for their Pediatric floor. Katie, Madison & David couldn’t make it to this drop off.Sad smile

On Friday the whole family went and delivered books to Timpanogos Regional Hospital and to Utah Valley Regional Hospital. We took 250 to UVR & 254 to Timpanogos Regional.

We only have enough books to deliver to 2 more hospital’s hopefully I’ll get those lined up with in the next 2 weeks.

Some of our picture’s turned out blurry, I suppose that’s what you get for taking them will my iPhone. I guess I need to take the good camera from now on.

Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (Idaho Falls, ID)

Today my good Friend Lisa Bloxham delivered 200 books to EIRMC. I’m so thankful to her for helping us out.

Last year she was a huge support too, even though she lived in Oklahoma. Her family hasn’t had the easiest time of it in the past few years. Their little girl Gracie was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma (cancer) when she was 3. Gracie is now 6 years old, in remission & doing great.

Lisa & I were friends in High School but not close friends, when heartache is involved it’s amazing how you bond and grow unexpected friendships that will last forever.

While Gracie’s parents were worrying about losing her everyday, I was grieving the loss of my Gabie and we became a support to one another on Facebook. It was never more than an encouraging remark from time to time but it always meant the world to me, and I’m glad I was able to reciprocate.

Last year Lisa sent us 2 large boxes of books in the mail and some money to buy books they were greatly appreciated. This last year The Bloxham family moved to Ammon, ID and I was so excited that they were close enough to come to our Book Drive Cleaning day. Then Lisa was willing to deliver the books to EIRMC since they are close to it and her husband is now an ER Doctor there. If you want to read more about Amazing Gracie’s story go here.

I got an email from Holly and she said they are currently treating 16 Pediatric patients and they are so excited to have books for them. That’s GREAT!!

Thank You Lisa!!

Topped 2000:)

Yesterday a new friend in our ward stopped by with 2 large boxes of books. After church last night I sorted through them and was so excited that there were only a few that we couldn’t use. There were 236 the were in great condition and we’ll be adding to our piles separated for the hospitals in Utah. I can’t say how AWESOME I think it is to receive so many great books from one family. Thank You so Much Jessica and Family!!

She totally took charge of contacting & delivering at both the Preston and Logan hospitals since they are in her neck of the woods. Pocatello Book Drive

Yesterday day David and I got up early and headed to Blackfoot to get the donated books from all the Blackfoot schools that helped us out. Then we headed back to Pocatello and met everyone that had came to help at the North Stake Building. We had a great turnout and ended up getting done the cleaning, labeling & sorting into specific hospital boxes. The end total was 732 books.
After we finished then we gave lots of hugs and thank you’s and then David, Katie and I headed to Bingham Memorial in Blackfoot and we took 132 books up to their nurses station where the children stay.
As soon as we got back to Pocatello we headed straight to Portnuef Medical Center. Where Melinda, Sarah, Madison, Jenna & Isaac met us. We then met with a Peds Nurse named Tiffany who took us to the Peds floor and accepted our 200 books for them . We visited a little bit with her, it turns out that David already knew her. They were in High School together and in their yearbook their names are actually switched under their pictures. David is listed as Tiffany Sasser & Tiffany is listed as David Saville. Tiffany told how much the hospital loves the books we donate and they are so excited that even now 3 years later we are still bringing them books.
We ended up with 200 Books for EIRMC, 200 Books for Portnuef Medical Center, 100 Books for Bingham Memorial. 100 Books for Preston Hospital & 100 for Logan Hospital.
When we are able to contact all the Utah Hospitals we’ll give an update on them.

Utah Books from Gabriel clean, label & sort…

Today we started at 9AM with 7 ladies cleaning, labeling & sorting all the donated books in Utah. We visited and enjoyed each others company while completing a great service.

When we receive the donated books we do not take them to the hospital until they have been wiped down with disinfecting wipes and checked for anything that may need to be blacked out like personal names or anything left from the previous owner. Then we label each book with a label that says:

Donated in Loving Memory of
Gabriel Grant Saville
January 26, 2009 – July 12, 2010

Then all the books are sorted into categories Board Books, Holiday, Religious, Activity, Early Readers, Chapter Books & Young Adult Books. Then we did a final count which was 1190 for the Utah Books. Once I contact all the hospitals that we will be delivering to and see how many books they would like then we will put together an assortment of all age books and deliver them to each hospital.

To go through 1190 books in just 3 hours is a great accomplishment for just the few of us that came. Our Thanks go to Brooke, JoAnna, Melenie, Sondra, Michelle & Katie!

Coming to a Close

The book drive this year is coming to a close. Tomorrow morning we will clean, label & organize all the books received in Utah. We will have them all ready to distribute to as many hospitals as we can.

Today David and I took all the money donated and purchased 44 new books that put us over 1700 in books total. Thank you to those who sent monetary donations, those donations really help provide enough books for young adults. We generally get a lot of books for infants and early readers but we struggle to get very many young adult books.

Next weekend we've planned to clean, label & organize all the books received in Idaho and distribute them to Portnuef Medical on Gabriel's Birthday, the 26th. The other books from Idaho will hopefully be sent to 2 or 3 other Idaho hospitals. All the Utah books will go to Utah hospitals, since our numbers are down this year we won't be able to donate the 1000 to PCMC like we did last year but we'll do what we can.

Thank you again for all your support this project means so much to our family and benefits so many grateful children & their parents.

KSL Interview

We are so excited to share our interview on KSL Channel 5 with Lori Prichard. We’ve been trying since Thanksgiving to get someone at KSL to finds some interest in our story. The web department said it was unlikely to get an article published, which was discouraging. Then I sent a Facebook message to KSL’s Jenn Hardman and she was awesome she started right away talking to her producers to find someone one interested in our story. Finally she put me in touch with the noon producer Kristine Pratt and she got us lined up for an interview on January 9th at noon with Lori Prichard. It was a live interview and I was really nervous. Nervous to cry on air, nervous to look too fat & most of all nervous to be tongue tied. I tell Gabriel’s story all the time but to tell it in 3 minutes and on Live TV was scary. But, I think I did alright.

After the interview David and I assumed it’d be posted online right away but it took a few days. So today we were so excited when we received a comment on the blog saying they saw our story on We have now had over 400 hits on this blog and a few comments on here and KSL a monetary donation and promises of books being dropped off on Monday. We are so happy that our story has been shared again.

For those of you who want to help our cause but feel time is too short since the book drive ends on the 14th we wanted to give you a little more time. We will be picking up all our drop off location boxes on Tuesday the 15th but if you are in the general vicinity of Salt Lake or Utah County and wouldn’t mind meeting us somewhere we would be happy to still get your books anytime up to the 25th and they will be used in this year’s book drive. Otherwise our home address is on the donation’s page and you can donate there year round. We do plan of continuing our book drive as long as we have support.

Thank you so much for all your kind comments and all your support it means the world to us.
